Research

The main Concentration Area of the Graduate Program in Philosophy at UFSCar is Structure and Genesis of the Subjectivity Concept. This area is divided, in turn, into four lines of research:

  • The Question of Subjectivity in the History of Philosophy
  • Subjectivity in the Philosophy of Psychology and Psychoanalysis
  • Ethics and Political Philosophy
  • Philosophy of Language

The Question of Subjectivity in the History of Philosophy

Its main aim is to follow the transformations by which the subjectivity concept formulated by modern philosophical systems went through, since its birth, in the 17th century, until contemporary reflections. This line has, therefore, two major themes. First, modern philosophy, which circumscribes the course followed by the idea of subjectivity, from cogito to German Idealism, passing through the empiricist version of subjectivity, its relations to topics such as taste and sensibility, and the revolution of critical philosophy. The second theme follows the deconstruction and reconstruction of subjectivity, from the reduction of cogito to a grammatical illusion to contemporary branches that questions the primacy of subjectivity.

Subjectivity in the Philosophy of Psychology and Psychoanalysis

Its main philosophical analytical focus is the forms of defining and questioning subjectivity in psychological and psychoanalytical theories. The projects included in this line of research seek to comprehend the relations between philosophy and theoretical branches in the history of psychology and psychoanalysis. They can take two directions: the epistemological attitude or the use of psychological themes in the history of philosophy. Regarding philosophy of psychoanalysis, there can be three aims in the investigation: the epistemological status of metapsychology or the theory of psychic apparatus; the exam of works dedicated to the account and analyses of clinical cases; the study of psychoanalytical texts that deal with culture. These theoretical exams are also opened to the investigation of thinkers and philosophical questions that may have influenced or determined the making of psychoanalysis as well as the study of the influence that psychoanalytical authors may have had on subsequent thinkers.

Ethics and Political Philosophy

This line of research discusses ethical and political philosophy themes. It prioritizes the problem of the making of moral subjectivity and the nature of political power. To this end, this line is divided into these two fundamental axes, ethics and politics, which allow the address of themes such as political regimes, virtue, friendship, sovereignty, power, revolution, representation, democracy, and it also considers the relation between theory and practice and the critique of human sciences. The researches developed in this line dialogue, eventually, with other subject areas, such as Law and Social Sciences.

Philosophy of Language

This line of research dedicates to analyze language in the history of philosophy. If contemporary philosophy of language stands out, this line is not limited to it, for it also addresses problems that partake the history of philosophy as a whole, whenever language is investigated as a specific theme for philosophical reflection. The main concern in this line is to investigate the relations, problematic at times, between subjectivity and language.
